Businesses for Societal Impact: The Social-Startup-Hub Bayern

How can entrepreneurship help solve societal and environmental challenges? In Bavaria, one answer is the Social-Startup-Hub Bayern (SSHB). As a central support hub for impact-driven founders and founders-to-be, the SSHB helps turn early ideas into sustainable and financially viable business models.

Supported by the Bavarian State Government as the first publicly funded hub for social startups, the SSHB has become a key player in Bavaria’s startup ecosystem. It is run by the Social Entrepreneurship Akademie (SEA), a pioneer in impact entrepreneurship with more than 15 years of experience in education, startup support, and ecosystem building as part of the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship in Munich.

One Hub, Many Paths to Impact

The Social-Startup-Hub Bayern supports individuals and teams across the state who want to create positive societal or environmental change through entrepreneurship. Support starts early, often at an early idea stage, and is always free of charge.

‘Our goal is to help founders develop solutions to societal challenges that work not only in theory, but also economically,’ says Kristina Notz, Executive Director of SEA and initiator of the Social-Startup-Hub Bayern. Most importantly, the hub is open to everyone: founders do not need to identify as social entrepreneurs from day one. Together with the SSHB team, they can explore how much societal impact their venture can realistically create.

With a holistic approach and a strong network of more than 45 partner organisations, the SSHB strengthens impact-oriented startups throughout Bavaria.

Advice, Networks and Learning Opportunities

The SSHB combines consulting, expert matchmaking, funding guidance, networking and events. Founders gain access to experienced mentors, investors, public administration, politics, and support organisations, while also building connections within the entrepreneurship community.

In addition to activities in Munich, the hub increasingly works regionally. Since 2025, the SSHB has expanded its local presence through partnerships in Bavarian regions (Allgäu, Upper Franconia, Mainfranken and Lower Bavaria, supporting the development of local impact ecosystems.

Doing Good Can Be Good Business

Since its launch in 2022, the Social-Startup-Hub Bayern has supported over 500 founders and social startups. Their ideas span fields such as health, inclusion, climate action, education and circular economy – all united by the ambition to combine societal impact with economic sustainability.

Five examples, supported by SEA or SSHB, show what this can look like in practice:

  • enna systems bridges the digital divide for older people and individuals with cognitive impairments through easy-to-use technology. Today, enna reaches over 25,000 users and has secured a million-euro investment to scale its solution.

  • RECUP, now Germany’s largest reusable packaging system for gastronomy, started as a small pilot project and grew into a nationwide solution used by over 20,000 partners, including major brands such as IKEA.

  • Meliodays Medical is developing the first non-hormonal, local treatment for menstrual pain and successfully closed an €800,000 pre-seed round in early 2025.

  • VoluLink connects social organisations, IT students and companies to co-create digital solutions for the social sector and recently secured federal funding to expand its impact.

  • sira Kinderbetreuung, founded in 2012 and now operating 40 locations, demonstrates how a former social startup can scale successfully while delivering innovative childcare solutions for municipalities and employers.

These stories show that impact and profitability are not opposites. On the contrary: societal value is becoming increasingly important for investors and customers alike. In a world facing complex global challenges, combining economic success with social responsibility is no longer optional – it’s the future of entrepreneurship.
