In this article we speak to David Cañadas Link and Philipp Steudle from Coby:

1. Start-up Idea: The Spark and Vision

• The spark for COBY originated from the personal journey of our founder, David Cañadas Link, who was diagnosed with Stargardt's disease, a progressive eye condition. Left unsupported after his diagnosis, David realized the critical gap in emotional and practical support for people facing life-altering health challenges. This inspired the creation of COBY - The Coping Buddy, an AI-powered chameleon plush companion designed to help children and families adapt to chronic illnesses. By providing emotional support, practical tools, and community connections, COBY addresses the significant unmet needs in healthcare.

2. The Role of Co-Creation

• Co-creation has been central to COBY's journey:

• Medical Insights: Collaborating with the Haunersche Kinderklinik (LMU), we learned about children's rights and cultural differences among families. This helped us validate the growing psychological challenges faced by children and caregivers, often overlooked by the tech market due to legal and privacy challenges and concerns.

• Patient Organizations: With ProRetina, the leading patient organization for the visually impaired in Germany, we explored the impact of having a community for patients with rare diseases. Support networks like these are critical to build emotional resilience, fostering belonging and shared coping mechanisms.

• Toy and Design Experts: Exchange with companies like Tonies and Partnerships with Kumquats and Schlagheck Design guided our understanding of the toy market, compliance standards (CE, DIN-EN 71), and market positioning. These collaborations highlighted the importance of safety, quality, and strategic branding in launching a child-focused product. They gave us a clear understanding of the road ahead and opened the way for collaboration in developement and production.

3. Future Goals and International Expansion

• Immediate Priorities:

• Develop a cross-platform digital MVP to make COBY accessible on devices like smartphones and tablets to a large audience.

• Develop 5 physiscal COBY prototypes to conduct our first pilot study at the Haunersche Kinderklinik and demonstrate its positive effect on children and their families.

• Leverage connections made at the South Summit in Spain, including potential collaborations with "LA ONCE," a Spanish organization championing accessibility and impact.

• Long-term Vision (5 years):

• Expand into international markets where regulatory environments allow for faster adoption, like Spain and Singapore, while leveraging COBY's German engineering credibility.

• Establish COBY as a hybrid product (physical and software) serving diverse cultural and linguistic groups.

• Build a vibrant community of users, backed by research proving COBY’s effectiveness in improving emotional and mental health.

• Secure DiGA certification in Germany to enhance affordability for patients through insurance reimbursement.

4. Impact of SCE Co-Creation Workshops

• The SCE Co-creation workshops transformed our approach to partnerships:

• Key Learnings:

• Focus on the problem rather than the solution when engaging potential partners. (this had a huge impact for us!)

• Explore collaborations with unexpected stakeholders, including competitors, for mutual benefit. (We wouldn´t have thought that this is actually possible - it is!)

• Build authentic connections by sharing genuine passion and values. (People are really looking for this and find it refreshing!)

• These workshops gave us a framework for developing meaningful relationships and emphasized the value of co-creation, turning fans into advocates. Thank you - it was a tremendous help!
