From Research to Real Impact: Lessons from Petter
Ahlström’s Entrepreneurial Journey
Petter Ahlström’s story shows what happens when academic insight meets entrepreneurial
drive. With a Master’s degree in Real Estate Economics and Construction Management from
KTH in Stockholm and a PhD in Economic Information Systems from Linköping University,
he could have stayed in the comfort zone of research or consulting. Instead, he chose to
build something tangible: translating his expertise into real-world solutions.
His passion for housing and services for seniors, a sector often overlooked by innovators,
became the foundation for his entrepreneurial mission. What started as academic curiosity
turned into ConceptLiving™, a senior housing model that combines real estate economics
with quality of life. Ahlström and his team developed holistic frameworks for “age
optimization”, a concept focused on the three keystones of well-being: nutrition, physical
activity, and social interaction.
Before launching his ventures, Petter worked in advisory services at CBRE and EY. But his
entrepreneurial leap came when he joined the Stena Center at Chalmers Innovation in
Gothenburg.
Over the following decade, he and a small group of partners co-founded several
companies including, a non-profit association, and a foundation, all focused on improving
how societies support their aging populations.
Reflecting on his journey, he emphasizes the full circle of entrepreneurship:
“Since my start I have grounded myself, and been one of a few partners, starting
seven companies (Ltd.). I also have the experience of doing the opposite (the
whole entrepreneurial Loop) when winding down three of my companies which I
once started.”
When the real estate market faced challenging years, Petter returned to academia as a
senior lecturer at University West, merging entrepreneurial experience with education.
For Petter, entrepreneurship starts with one simple but powerful ingredient: commitment.
“You must be committed to your vision and goals,” he says. “Choose something you are
passionate about every day. You must love what you are doing.”
His words carry the weight of experience: a decade navigating both market highs and lows,
learning that passion sustains what money and luck cannot.
Equally vital, he adds, is belief.
“Believe in the product, in your vision, in your strategy, in your team, in yourself, and in your
customers. People will follow your lead, so make sure you truly believe in what you’re doing,
or be brave enough to change direction.”
When asked about the biggest opportunities for young entrepreneurs, Petter doesn’t
romanticize the journey. Entrepreneurship, he says, demands patience and resilience:
“Quality takes time. You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable.”
He reminds founders that success rarely comes overnight: it’s the outcome of steady work,
adaptability, and a willingness to step beyond comfort zones.
On the flip side, he warns against underestimating the formal side of entrepreneurship.
“Learn the system: taxes, VAT, legal frameworks, bookkeeping. It’s part of the game,” he
explains. “And never forget: your real success comes from understanding your customer:
their needs, wants, and desires. Solve their problem, and you’ve found your proof of
success.”
Another essential lesson: no founder should build in isolation.
“You don’t have to innovate everything yourself. Be part of a community, an incubator, or an
innovation network. Entrepreneurship is a long road: if you want to go fast, go alone; if you
want to go far, go together.”
Looking ahead, Petter believes the entrepreneurial landscape is being reshaped by a new
force - Artificial Intelligence.
“It is obvious that there is an paradigm shift going on changing the game for in
the hole global market conditions. And that game changer is Artificial
Intelligence (AI). So if not lose accuracy keep up with it and learn how to use it.
Because if you want or not you have to realize everything will have changed and
your opportunities for business of tomorrow.”
Petter Ahlström’s journey captures the essence of modern entrepreneurship: connecting
research with real-world impact, and combining empathy with innovation.
His story reminds us that meaningful ventures don’t just create profit, they create lasting value for society and the people within it.
